Shops: Aristocrat Lamps & Lighting

48 Abell St., Toronto

Mon. – Fri. 8:30 am – 5 pm

With 5,000 square feet of showroom space packed wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling, it’s hard to say that Toronto’s mammoth Aristocrat Lamps and Lighting specializes in any one thing, except maybe fantastic prices.

From vintage glam to minimalist modern, Aristocrat has something for everyone, but you’ll have to dig for your treasure; the store’s riot of stock makes shopping here a DIY adventure. In the unlikely event that you can’t find the perfect shade, Aristocrat’s cheeky family team will whip up a custom fit at no extra charge ($20 – $40).

Mid-century Arc-style floor lamps ($85 – $150) are usually available along with a rich selection of exotic, brass lamps ($90) and house-made Sputnik chandeliers (12 branches $450).

The only trouble with Aristocrat is that it’s not open weekends. Which might explain why the place is legendary among local designers but remains largely unknown to consumers after nearly 30 years in this prime location off West Queen West, opposite the Drake Hotel.
